Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 cover display switches from AMOLED to LCD

Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 are expected to ship on July 10. However, a recent spec sheet showed an intriguing drop on the Flip 6's cover display.

Since its launch, the Galaxy Z Flip series has included an AMOLED panel for the cover display. Although it was little at first, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 had a reasonably large and functional external display.

With a significant alteration, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is expected to employ the same size cover display.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 will now include an IPS LCD panel for its cover display, according to a leaked spec sheet. The 3.4-inch display will remain the same in size but will use an LCD rather than an AMOLED. At 720x748, the resolution is likewise the same.

This is an odd change, and there is not much in the way of rationale that makes sense.

The maximum brightness of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover panel was 1,600 nits, which is a little low by today's standards. However, an updated AMOLED display would be just as capable of attaining higher brightness levels as an IPS LCD. The fact that Samsung has not utilized an LCD panel in any of its flagship launches in a while makes it strange as well.

In addition, there are rumors that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will cost more.

Regardless of Samsung's rationale, when the gadget is formally unveiled on July 10th, we should probably find out more.

On Samsung.com, reservations for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 are now available, with a $50 reservation credit and the possibility of savings of up to $1,500.
