New cyberattack targets iPhone users, Hacks Apple ID information

Washington, DC (TND) — Tech specialists have discovered a new cyberattack that targets Apple IDs, and they have issued a warning to all iPhone owners.
  • This instance involves an Apple ID. You may actually think of your Apple ID as a master key that unlocks your phone," said Michael Nowatkowski, head of Augusta University's Cyber Institute.

The scam operates as follows: cybercriminals will pretend to be from Apple and send you a text message. After that, you will be prompted to click on a link to view a "important message" regarding iCloud.
  • When you click on a link, it will take you to what looks to be a genuine website, but in reality, it is merely a copy of something else," Nowatkowski explained.

The fraudulent website will then request that customers provide their Apple ID details.
  • That would allow someone to access your financial details and contacts," Nowatkowski added.

At Emory University, Ramnath Chellappa teaches information systems. Set up two-factor authentication, which involves a password and a verification code from an external device, to further safeguard yourself, he advised.
  • Before you can access your own account if it is coming from another device, you need to submit a second form of authentication, according to Chellappa.

Additionally, get in touch with the business if you have serious doubts about the veracity of the message.
  • Do not trust any email or SMS unless you have actively sought it out," advised Chellappa.
